MIDDLE SCHOOL AND COLLEGE

Middle School Year 7-9 / College Year 10-12

“It has been a difficult thing for many parents to find the kind of social education environment which will be respectful of children’s challenges as well as their differences. One of the things that has been wonderful about the Bold Park Community School is its opportunity to respond to the needs that are specific to the child without being ‘locked into’ a curriculum approach to learning. Having said that, it is reassuring when a school can deliver at a pace and style that is respectful of the individual differences and needs AND to demonstrate the relevance of curriculum issues into the application for real life and living.”

(Dr Trevor Parry, a Western Australian Developmental Paediatrician and the WA Citizen of the Year for 2010, speaking about BOLD PARK COMMUNITY SCHOOL).

Secondary Education is in a phase of significant educational reform and families are choosing Bold Park Community School as a school that delivers  a unique, individualised, K-12 learning environment inspired by constructively oriented curriculum and the latest in contemporary research in disciplines such as education, brain research, philosophy and the arts.

Families can be confident that all programs delivered in Middle School and College meet all of the legislated WA Curriculum Framework standards and will be fully compliant to the requirements of the Australian Curriculum, due for full implementation in 2013. All subjects and courses are delivered by WACOT registered teaching staff.

The Senior School week is not dictated by bells and timetables; whilst teaching staff are mindful of providing a balanced program of education across all learning areas, they have the flexibility to extend an investigation or activity when the momentum of student engagement demands.

At Bold Park Community School, all ‘intelligences’ are valued and celebrated. The belief that children are able to express these intelligences in ‘100 languages’ is a core value that underpins the school’s educational philosophy and is strongly reflected in the practices and procedures of classroom life.

Our current structure offers a community class with 11-16 year olds, which fosters a unique caring, nurturing and ‘family’ based environment for targeting the specific needs of emerging teenagers and young adults.

Middle School Program – Years 7-9

Middle School offer the traditional core subjects (English, Maths, Society & Environment and Scienc e) which are delivered by fully registered WACOT teaching staff. The Middle School program is greatly enriched by our focus teaching staff.

Currently, Middle School subject offerings include;

English

Mathematics

Science

Society and Environment

History

Philosophy

Outdoor Education

Health Studies

Italian

Media Studies

Physical Education

Integrated Arts

From time to time, there is some fluidity in these offerings as student interests and initiates determine the focus of the curriculum agenda. If students demonstrate an interest in a particular arena, these subjects may be expanded to incorporate areas they wish to investigate more fully. In this way we maintain a more ‘elastic’ approach to our offering base allowing students an authentic ownership of their curriculum.

Middle School complies with all of the requirements of the Western Australian Curriculum Framework, in fact, far exceeding many of the core requirements in programing, content, mapping and reporting. The school meets all of the demands of NAPLAN and National Testing needs. Our Professional Development has demonstrated rigour in consideration and early implementation of the Australian Curriculum across Middle School.

The Arts program is an integral part of the Middle School experience; however, it is not designed to be a ‘stand-alone’ portion of the student’s week. Please take the time to review the “The Arts Program” section of this brochure, which explains this program in more detail.

College Program & Course Offerings – Years 10-12

College offer a range of Courses which ensure all students exceed the requirements of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).  We offer an individualised program to meet the needs of students who are targeting a vocational or tertiary pathway in their post-secondary worlds.

We develop a program with students which incorporate; WACE Courses, Endorsed Programs, Nationally Accredited Certificate (VET) Courses and Workplace Learning offerings. These areas are explained in more detail in the College Handbook along with the requirements for achieving Year 12 graduation.

Working under the banner of Curriculum Council requirements we are able to offer a broad range of courses and experiences for students in Years 10-12. Whilst offerings may change from year to year based on individual student needs, we currently offer;

English (P-Stage 2)

Mathematics (P-Stage 2)

Chemistry (Stage 1)

Integrated Science (Stage 1)

Media (Stage 1)

Outdoor Education (Stage 1)

Physical Education (Stage 1)

Health Studies (Stage 1)

In addition, through partnerships with TAFE we offer Nationally Recognised Certificate Courses that also contribute to the pool of student WACE (graduation) credits. College students are currently completing a Certificate II in Visual Arts & Contemporary Craft.

Students are also given full credit for their participation in Endorsed Programs and targeted Workplace Learning initiatives.

A student at Bold Park Community School, commencing Year 10 in 2011 and finishing in Year 12 in 2013 will likely accumulate 27 WACE Course Units and at least one Nationally Accredited Certificate II Qualification tailored to their strengths, interests and leanings. It would be unlikely to achieve this range of achievement in many Western Australian schools.
